play piano by ear
Marie asked:

I really love the piano, and I love classical music, but I can’t play by ear. I am wondering if it is possible for someone who cannot play by ear to attain to the level of concert pianist. I would really love to be able to play the classics, but I am wondering if this is possible. Thanks.

I’ve been playing piano for a few years now. I’ve memorized all of the major scales, and some of the minor ones. I can sight read and play a piece from a score, but my ear training seems to be… er… bad. How can I start trying to play a piece by just listening to it?

Like, I know how to read music. And when I play guitar, clarinet and flute I always have to look at music.
But with piano, it bugs me to look at music, so I just play by ear and it sounds “perfect”
If I remember correctly Beethoven was deaf… and he composed his own songs.
I do not write my own songs, I hear them and play them.

So that comparison, I do not see.
Sence I was 6 I think, and i am now 15

I have been playing pop music on piano by just developing it through listening. I have always loved jazz music and find it really complicating to follow in applying the play-by-ear method. Any help will be greatly appreciated….thanks!!!
