As I looked down at my most recent composition lit by my grand piano lamp, the Piano Lamp which my grandmother gave me, I looked back on my life and all that I have been through. When I was younger I was in love with music and the arts. Math never really interested me. There was no difference in the end product, there was no legroom. Either you were right or wrong. There was no creativity.

However, in music you can explore many possibilities. There is no right or wrong answer. I started piano lessons at a very young age, practicing under a very old Grand Piano Lamp. My family didn’t have a lot of money; however, my mother scraped together what she could in order to pay the old lady who live above us. Truly at first I was not very good at all. I practiced and practiced and nothing seemed to work.

However, one day everything just clicked. I figure it all out, the notes and tone and everything. I was in love. From that day on I have played the piano just about everyday, and I have loved it ever since. In high school I started playing with the concert band and the strings. I even played a solo or two. It was my high school band teacher, who encouraged me to start writing my own music.
At first the process was awkward and unnatural. I got writers block and often started over. Over the next two years I gradually started to gain more and more confidence about my compositions. When I was 18 I was the chosen as the main performance at the concert at my high school. I performed Beethoven and one of my own compositions. I got a standing ovation! College was a blur. All I did was practice, write music, and study. Once done I joined the Cincinnati Orchestra. I did not perform any of my on music, but it was a good experience. I did write music on the side. Eventually I started to play more and more of my own pieces.

Until I wrote an Oscar winning song for an upcoming movie, then I exploded from obscurity. Everybody wanted me to compose songs for movies or commercials or for record deals. It was too much. I ended up going back to my home and trying to stay out of the spotlight. When I returned home, I brought my grand piano to practice with. My grandmother bought me the greatest gift I’ve ever received, a grand piano light. This piano light isthe most meaning full thing to me.

My grandmother died six months after she gave it to me. That was the worst day of my life. This pain showed in my music. I started to write more and more gloomy pieces. I released a CD with all of these songs. It was not a hit or anything; however, it was nice to get my feelings out there.
