About The Three Standard Types Of Piano Benches You Can [Buy|Purchase|Own}
Filed Under Arts, Entertainment and Music
There are a variety of causes why someone would own piano benches. Some are treasured family heirlooms while others are appreciated at precious antiques. The piano stool was the earliest form of piano seating. This three legged stool is what we see in western movies which feature saloon scenes.
Prior to the early 1840s the two main styles for the piano stool were very ordinary or intricately carved pieces of wood.
During the next decade we can see the institution of intricately carved cabriolet legs, serpentine shaped seats, and beautiful floral motifs. We often find piano stools from England and the U.S. manufactured during the Victorian era which had legs which had been elaborately carved and softened seats.
In the 1860s we get the beginning of the piano chair. Piano chairs originally had three legs just like piano stools and back which emphasized delicate carvings.
The piano bench which so many of us are used to these days was first instituted in the 1870s. Some of these first piano benches include a storage booth located under the seat cushion which supplied room for sheet music.
The seat cushions of these early piano benches often feature dainty sewing or needlepoint work. Piano benches continued to be affected by the style of the Victorian age well into the 1920s. Often the piano benches of this time period will feature beautifully turned legs and glass ball and claw feet. Piano benches were made by a company other than the piano manufacturer, using the details provided by the maker of the piano.
There are three main kinds of piano bench. The rectangular piano bench is the most common. These kinds are not adjustable and come in a standard height. The concert piano bench will feature circular knobs which allow you to modify the height.
You will also normally find a plush padded seat on a concert piano bench. The piano chair is the most rare type of antique piano bench. These were not a typical selection with the purchase of a piano and many pianists found them uncomfortable.
