My opinion was originally taught to actually read music then you can read music then you play it with practice of course when you can just pick up piece and play it with practice of course when you can only hear pieces youve heard before or heard someone else.

The basic chords you can incorporate various runs trills etc.
It depends what you want to do as a piano player. If you just want to futz around, by ear is OK. If you want to learn to play music as it is written, play in a band, accompany singers or yourself, you should definitely learn to read music.
The situation when youre doing solo performance would recommend learning to say you when playing with an ensemble its just more difficult to say you dont read music.
